The First Week

I have owned my house for over a week, and been sleeping here for just about a week. So many things to get use to, so many things to do and even more that I want to do. I so far am enjoying my house, I have gone through the whole range of emotions while I have been surviving in a disorganized place. The first night I was staying, my parents were about to leave and I cried… well that isn’t much of a surprise, I am a crier anyway I cry at sappy movies and commercials as well as touching cards and books. And forget about a love song that takes me back to time spent someplace else. So what made me cry that day? Just the overwhelming thought of where to begin and not only that but the thought that I was alone in this house. Things have gotten better over the week, the overwhelmingness has diminished, not gone, but definitely lessened. Things are coming together, but I still have a long way to go. At least it is beginning to look like a house or actually a home.

The biggest issue of my first week was moving my cat into the house, first, she doesn’t like to travel… and she was living at my parents house which is about 45 minutes from where I live.  The trip wasn’t as bad as some of the trips to the vet, however, it still wasn’t the best. When we got to the house, I took her to the basement, where her litter box is. I let her out of her carrier, and she bolted. She found her hiding place, she spent the first 24+ hours at the house under the stairs. She has made her way out and has made herself at home. Just another unexpected stressor for a new home owner.

The Second Twenty Four or Meeting the Neighbors

The 2nd 24 hours have come and gone, it was an exhausting weekend, I was excited to go to work on Monday, just to rest. No, I am not an Air Traffic Controller. The weekend wasn’t only spent moving stuff, but I worked and had a friends 100th Birthday Party to go to.

Sunday morning, not too early, I headed to my parents house, to pack my car and their truck with boxes. Had some time to check out all the great things my mom has recently done, she made a cute new walk way in her yard, and stained the deck. She is an incredible woman, very creative and hard-working. And I have her help and my dad’s help in putting my house together. They are the best parents a girl can ask for.

Once the cars were packed to the brim, it was time to go get ready to attend a party honoring a lovely woman who is celebrating her 100th birthday. Can you imagine all the things she has seen and experienced over these past 100 years. This event was wonderful, when we walked in, she lit up. We got hugs and kisses, and she wanted to know where we have been, why we have not stopped by… definitely going to have to stop by more. She is a firecracker that one. Her birthday is today… so Happy Birthday Bessie!

Once we mingled at her party, we did have to get on the road to my house so we could get the cars unpacked. As we were unpacking, I noticed my neighbors in their backyard… so I decided to venture out and introduce myself to them. I met husband and wife, and girl, girl and boy… and their dog and cat… first impression, very nice respectful children and couple. A little while later, my neighbor across the street came to visit bringing me a welcome basket with lots of goodies.

Here is the basket both in the basket and laid out to see all the goodies, plus a cute basket. Thank you neighbor!!! 🙂

The rest of the afternoon was spent putting together an IKEA bookcase, and my dad started changing the locks. I didn’t realize how slow of a process this is. I have not spent the night in my house yet, that is coming soon, and I am looking forward to it. I am so thankful for my parents who have helped me with this move, I know if I didn’t have them and their support, I don’t know where I would be. A big I LOVE YOU to my Mom and Dad. This on a day that now two high school friends have lost their mothers on this day. I am so sorry that they have each lost a parent on this day, one, 10 years ago today, the other, her mother passed away today.

Who is most important to you in your life? Do you tell them you love them daily? Don’t let a day go by that you don’t tell them you don’t know when they will be taken from you.

The First 24…

I have been a home owner for just over 24 hours… and I have had the best 24 hours I have had in a long time… from signing all that paper work and drinks out with my banker, realtor and their realtor… to working this morning meeting potential incoming students (nothing to do with my house) and shopping for paint (still looking) and locks.

Right now I am exhausted but it is such a rewarding exhaustion. Everything I am doing is being done to make my house a home.

So far I have a sparkling bathroom… clean wood floors in the 2 bedrooms as well as clean closets (yes I have cleaned out my closets 😉 ), hall and front room… cleaned under and behind the stove (you won’t believe the things I found under there)

The dust bunnies, multiplied into Buffalos 😉 there was enough dog food for a doggies dinner and so many crumbs. I feel pretty good with all the work I have completed and having to work today. A pretty successful day all in all.

Third Time’s a Charm!

I received great news today… my dream of owning a house is coming true this week. I know I posted that I was supposed to close on April 1st, well April 1st came and went… and no closing. 😦

I began to think it wasn’t going to happen, when I got a phone call today. It is official, I will be a home owner on Thursday Friday! Looks as if I have had a change in days… I should be closing on Friday now… It is that pesky little government wanting to know what the left hand is doing, or something like that. While I have a time and a date, I am still afraid that something will go wrong. However if I go with the old saying Third Time’s a Charm, everything should come together on Thursday. This is the third house I have had a contract on, however, none of the other houses did I have an actually closing date and time.

If you are looking to get a house-warming gift for me…

This cute Tiffany & Co. Key Ring would be a lovely give for my new set of house keys.

A bottle of Jordan Winery Cabernet Sauvignon. I want to have a nice bottle of wine to enjoy on my first evening in my house.

And if you are stuck for an idea… gift cards are always welcome 😉 Any home improvement center (Home Depot, Lowes or Menards), home decor store (Target, TJMaxx or Walmart) or grocery store (I’m going to have to stock the kitchen)

Truly, I can hardly wait, I am a little worried about buyer’s remorse, but the movie Under the Tuscan Sun taught me a little about buyer’s remorse, I would add in a movie clip, but it isn’t working. So if you have not seen the movie check it out.

Wish me luck on this great new adventure, owning a part of the “American Dream.”

WWW… Wednesdays

To play along, just answer the following questions:

  • What are you currently reading?
  • What did you just finish reading?
  • What is next on your reading list?

Thought I would join in on this posting for today’s post. Reading is one of my escapes, so it makes sense on a day that I want to escape I write about it.

My current read is comfort food, only a couple of chapters in and already, I’m hooked. As far as I can tell it is about a mother and her daughters relationships. We will see where it goes.

The book I just finished reading, was a dual book from Nora Roberts, it is the first of two books on the MacGregor Clan. Playing the Odds and Tempting Fate. The books are basically about a family, and the patriarch is determined to marry off his children, which surprise, he does. Since reading provides an escape for me, these books do just that, give me an opportunity to escape.

As for what is next on my list… It sort of depends on when I finish and what boxes get unpacked next. One book on my list, Cesar Millan’s – Be the Pack Leader (borrowed from my parents), Rachel Cline’s – What to Keep (found at Good Will, liked the look of the cover) or Jennifer Weiner’s – The Guy not Taken, (ie – my life also found at Good Will, read all her other books).

Not only do I love to read, but I love to shop for books, I love bookstores new and used – large and small, thrift stores digging through their book section, or going to garage sales and finding someone who loves books as much as I do.

One of my favorite bookstores I have ever spent time in is a little bookstore in Hyde Park in Chicago, 57th Street Books. It is a bookstore you can get lost for hours in, one that no one will bother you (unless you are with someone who is in a hurry) and you can browse and browse. It is a lovely little bookstore, something very different from the big bookstores if you ever find yourself with time on your hands in the Hyde Park area, make your way to 57th Street Books.

So thankful for spring as garage sales will be starting which means adding to my book selection.

What have you read recently? Where do you shop for books and/or what is your favorite place to find your books?

Takes Me There

Music has had a profound impact on my life; a song can stop me dead in my tracks and take me back to a moment in my past or remind me of what I am looking for in life. I love music of all kinds, all genres from classical to rock and everything in between. In fact, one song is playing right now (Need You Now by Lady Antebellum) that takes my mind to a place where I don’t
want it to be, but for whatever reason, this song takes me there.

Last night I watched Gray’s Anatomy, their music episode. Very powerful and touching, the music fit each scene and the characters situations perfectly. I swear, that I have days like that, although, I don’t break out into song, much to the appreciation of my co-workers.  For similar reasons, I use to love the TV show Ally McBeal. Theme Songs playing as you walk in the room, the song that gives you the power to get back up as life has kicked you to the ground.

As I was thinking about the impact music has, I was thinking about songs that have a spot in my memory. Some are theme songs from different times in my life and some are songs that take me there… The weird thing as I was thinking back on my wild and wonderful life, some songs cause me to remember everything so vividly, what I wore (clothes and perfume) and who I was with; yet other songs just take me to a place in my memory or a place I have not been, but am longing to be and I still know what I would wear and who (I think) belongs there with me.

Some of the songs in no particular order are:

  • Ironic – Alanis Morrisette
  • Rain King – Counting Crows
  • Seasons of Love – Cast of Rent
  • According to You – Orianthi
  • If  You Don’t Know Me By Now – Simply Red
  • Ice Cream – Sarah McLachlan
  • Woman – John Lennon
  • My Sharona – The Knack
  • The Way We Were – Barbara Streisand
  • My Ding-A-Ling – Chuck Berry
  • Alive – Pearl Jam
  • People Are Strange – The Doors
  • Mr. Jones – Counting Crows
  • Blister in the Sun – Violent Femmes
  • This – Darius Rucker
  • Avalon – Roxy Music
  • I’d Really Love to See You Tonight – England Dan and John Ford Coley
  • Who You’d Be Today – Kenny Chesney
  • Need You Now – Lady Antebellum
  • Wanna Be – Spice Girls
  • Better Man – Pearl Jam
  • Shook Me All Night Long – AC/DC
  • Marine Corps Hymn – USMC
  • Picture – Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow
  • Bring Me To Life – Evanescence
  • In the Garden – Church Hymn

While I could share stories of where these songs take me, it is best to just know that these songs take me back. If you know me, one of these songs might remind me of you, do you know which one? If you don’t know me… well, maybe we have some memories yet to be made.

What songs take you back? Do you have a theme song?
