A sense of accomplishment

Today, I decided to start my first painting project. My bathroom needed painting… I found the “perfect” white paint in the “oops” paint at Home Depot. If you don’t know about oops paint… a gallon for a low price of $5. I have a variety of paints for my house all from the oops paints. Check Lowes and Menards as well… if you are looking for a color, but not super picky about the shade, you can find some great colors. ūüôā I knew I wanted to paint my bathroom white from the day I closed. I think that a white bathroom is refreshing and the options I am left with are wonderful. I wanted to be able to have a variety of rugs and towels to add color to the room. If my wall color is white, I am not limited in the colors of rugs and towels.

Here is my starting point… a sort of creamy coffee color.

Midpoint… first coat…

Almost end point… a pretty white. The only thing I have left to do, take down the tape.

I do feel a sense of accomplishment, even if my bathroom is not 100% complete. Painting is a lot harder when doing it on ones own… especially when you have to paint around the toilet, sconces, mirrors is a small space. Right now, my rugs and towels are yellow… my other decor in my bathroom are ducks. Rubber ducks to be exact. The next thing I need to add to my bathroom is shelves for my ducks. Once I find the right ones. I will add a follow-up picture once my ducks have their own home. What have you accomplished lately?

Things I need/want

While my process of settling in my house has been a slow one, I have discovered some needs/wants. In no particular order:

1.) Treadmill / Bowflex Treadclimber: From the commercials, I really want the treadclimber, however, I know NO ONE with a treadclimber. I would like to  try it out before I were to purchase something like this.

2.) Full Wall Black and White¬†Mural of Paris: My bedroom has a very french inspired theme, as I was looking on-line, I came across this great idea… however, it is a little out of my price range. Wouldn’t it be great to wake and see the city of Paris every morning.

3.) A new roof: As I am learning, roofs come in various forms… some are forever, some are not… I would like a metal roof… If I could make it fit my budget. Metal roofs will outlast the house… I think while it maybe a little more expensive in the beginning, it might be a better investment. (any thoughts?)

4.)My own landscaper: This is a dream, as I can do the work. However, I am lacking the knowledge of what to put where. I know things are moveable… so I am making the best of it and slowly making my yard mine.

5.) Hanging Daybed (outdoors): I have seen these in a variety of different magazines… I want to have one of these in my outdoor room. Eventually, I will be tearing off part of my garage to make an outdoor pergola room. When I have that room ready, this is something I would like to do.

6.) A Flat Screen TV: Would really like to pick out a¬†new Flat Screen TV… I don’t have one picked out, but I would like one that I can hang on my wall and that fits my room, not too big, but big enough to read the print on the TV when sitting on my couch. Probably around 40″ or so.

These are the top 6 needs on my list, number 7 would be the winning lottery tickets… so I could take care of all this and then some. What are you needing?

What my town needs… at least in my eyes

So I have had some time to get sort of settled in my house and my neighborhood. I have some wants for my town to add to my list of things to make this little part of the world a little better. Now I know no where is perfect, however, I am loving my neighborhood. I have joined our neighborhood organization… and provided some ideas of things that I think would be fun for our neighborhood. There are also some things that I think my town needs…

1. ¬†Trader Joes… or Whole Foods… I’m leaning toward Trader Joes, they have great cheese and wine.

2.  A wine bar or a place grown folks can go to meet other grown folks. How does one make new friends as a grown up?

3. A better public transportation system. One that runs into the evenings…¬†so you cane be the responsible one and not drive after enjoying some of those adult beverages.

4. They need to build up the downtown area. I can tell, and actually know that at one time it was a busy city center, however with the invention of the mall, the store front stores went out. ūüė¶ Just a sad state of the world.

5.  A real farmers market. When I lived in Kansas City, I fell in love with Farmers Markets. Here is the link to the Kansas City Market http://www.thecitymarket.org/ check it out you will see how amazing it is. It has a little bit of everything and some great produce. This could also build up the city center. Just a thought. One of my biggest frustrations is that the current farmers market is on Fridays from 8am Р2pm. Makes it very hard for a person who works to go and enjoy the farmers market.

Those are my 5 things that I think my town needs to improve the lives of those living here… mainly me ūüôā Thanks for reading!

Red Light District… or…

I have been working on decorating and organizing the inside of my house, but I can’t help but think about the outside as well. My house is a white house, with a black front door and shutters. I want to refinish¬†my front porch lights,¬†house numbers¬†and mail box (rusted brass), I¬†would like to paint them black as well. My other thoughts are to have red flowers out in front. So far, I have a red hanging plant, I plan to add more as time and¬†money permit. My other idea, takes me to my title. Once I have repainted¬†the lights and¬†have them back in place, I would like to¬†find the perfect color bulb to¬†the front and side doors. This idea came from friends who have their porch light¬†a blue light. Wonderful for ease of directions, come to the house¬†with the blue light.

My dilemma, what color to add to my porch. While red would make sense a wonderful accent to black and white… I don’t want the neighborhood¬†to have¬† thoughts along the lines of my starting a brothel. ūüėČ Other choices I have seen: Orange, Yellow, Green, Purple, Blacklight and the blue.

With the red flowers which most likely won’t be seen when the porch light is on, what would your suggestion be for picking a light bulb?¬†Because I don’t think I want people to think they are living near/in the red light district. Any suggestions?

The First Week

I have owned my house for over a week, and been sleeping here for just about a week. So many things to get use to, so many things to do and even more that I want to do. I so far am enjoying my house, I have gone through the whole range of emotions while I have been surviving in a disorganized place. The first night I was staying, my parents were about to leave and I cried… well that isn’t much of a surprise, I am a crier anyway I cry at sappy movies and commercials¬†as well as touching cards and books. And forget about a love song that takes me back to time spent someplace else. So what made me cry that day? Just the overwhelming thought of where to begin and not only that but the thought that I was alone in this house. Things have gotten better over the week, the overwhelmingness has diminished, not gone, but definitely lessened. Things are coming together, but I still have a long way to go. At least it is beginning to look like a house or actually a home.

The biggest issue of my first week was moving my cat into the house, first, she doesn’t like to travel… and she was living at my parents house which is about 45 minutes from where I live.¬† The trip wasn’t as bad as some of the trips to the vet, however, it still wasn’t the best. When we got to the house, I took her to the basement, where her litter box is. I let her out of her carrier, and she bolted. She found her hiding place, she spent the first 24+ hours at the house under the stairs. She has made her way out and has made herself at home. Just another unexpected stressor for a new home owner.

The Second Twenty Four or Meeting the Neighbors

The 2nd 24 hours have come and gone, it was an exhausting weekend, I was excited to go to work on Monday, just to rest. No, I am not an Air Traffic Controller. The weekend wasn’t only spent¬†moving stuff, but I worked and had a friends 100th¬†Birthday Party to¬†go to.

Sunday morning, not too early, I headed to my parents house, to pack my car and their truck with boxes. Had some time to check out all the great things my mom has recently done, she made a cute new walk way in her yard, and stained the deck. She is an incredible woman, very creative and hard-working. And I have her help and my dad’s help in¬†putting my house together. They are the best parents a girl can ask for.

Once the cars were¬†packed to the brim, it was time to go get ready¬†to¬†attend a party honoring a lovely woman who is celebrating her 100th birthday. Can you imagine all the¬†things she has seen and experienced over these past¬†100 years. This event was wonderful, when we walked in, she lit up.¬†We got hugs and kisses, and she wanted to know where we have been, why we have not¬†stopped by… definitely going to have to stop by more. She is a firecracker that one. Her birthday is today… so Happy Birthday Bessie!

Once we mingled at her party, we did have to get on the road to my house so we could¬†get the cars¬†unpacked. As we were unpacking, I noticed my neighbors in their backyard… so I decided to¬†venture out and introduce myself to them.¬†I met husband and wife,¬†and girl, girl and boy… and their dog and cat… first impression, very nice respectful children and couple.¬†A little while later, my neighbor across the street came to¬†visit bringing me a welcome basket with lots of goodies.

Here is the basket both in the basket and laid out to see all the goodies, plus a cute basket. Thank you neighbor!!! ūüôā

The rest of the afternoon was spent putting together an IKEA bookcase, and my dad started changing the locks. I didn’t realize how slow of a process this is. I have not spent the night in my house yet, that is coming soon, and I am looking forward to it. I am so thankful for my parents who have helped me with this move, I know if I didn’t have them and their support, I don’t know where I would be. A big I LOVE YOU to my Mom and Dad. This on a day that now two high school friends have lost¬†their mothers on this day. I am so sorry that they have¬†each lost a parent on this day, one, 10 years ago today, the other, her mother passed away today.

Who is most important to you in your life? Do you tell them you love them daily? Don’t let a day go by that you don’t tell them you don’t know when they will be taken from you.

The First 24…

I have been a home owner for just over 24 hours… and I have had the best 24 hours I have had in a long time… from signing all that paper work and drinks out with my banker, realtor and their realtor… to working this morning meeting potential incoming students (nothing to do¬†with my house)¬†and shopping for paint (still looking) and locks.

Right now I am exhausted but it is such a rewarding exhaustion. Everything I am doing is being done to make my house a home.

So far I have a sparkling bathroom… clean wood floors in the 2 bedrooms as well as clean closets (yes I have cleaned out my closets ūüėČ ),¬†hall and front room… cleaned under and behind the stove (you won’t believe¬†the things I¬†found¬†under there)

The dust bunnies, multiplied into Buffalos ūüėČ there was enough dog food for a doggies dinner and so many crumbs. I feel pretty good with all the work I have completed and having to work today. A pretty successful day all in all.
